I have a rare genetic disease called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) that I passed onto my kids. Next year when my son turns 11 he will need to start going for a colonoscopy every year till surgery is needed, my daughter is right behind by 2 years. So again I thank you all for all that you are doing.

Re: Irish Barley and Vegetable Stew – A Colon Healthy St. Patty’s Day Festive Option!

Sounds great for Sunday night family dinner!

Re: Happy One Year Anniversary to the Free Colonoscopy

I'm an uninsured 46 year old with colon cancer history with my father and his mother (my grandmother). My father has been wanting me to get screened, but with no insurance and what seems like a $5,000 cost I've held off. My plan is to buy insurance, and then get screened. I'm self employed, and live in CA. Any advice on what health insurance company and/or plan I should look into? I've gotten and cancelled covered a few times because each time they dramatically raise the premiums after a few months, and it seemed as though Colonoscopies weren't covered. So the ACA's "free" colonoscopy might finally be the reason to stay signed up, and get a pre-50 yr old exam. Thoughts?

Re: 1st Time at 50

NEW under-publicized guidelines for African Americans stress EARLIER first colonoscopy—We need your
help!

Did you know-

·
that African Americans have the HIGHEST RATE OF
COLON AND RECTAL CANCER of ANY racial or ethnic group in the US?

·
that more African Americans are diagnosed with
an ADVANCED STAGE COLON CANCER at age 50, and have decreased survival compared
with other races?

·
that in 2009, the American College of
Gastroenterology changed their guidelines to recommend colonoscopy for HEALTHY
AFRICAN AMERICANS AT AGE 45?

Why is this message
critical?

Here’s the deal. Occasionally we diagnose folks with colon
cancer on their very first screening colonoscopy at age 50. If you’re Hispanic,
Asian, or Caucasian, it’s likely to be an early colon cancer, just needing
simple surgery to cure. But if you’re Black, 1/3 will have advance colon cancer
at 50, not surgically curable. Our old message of colonoscopy at age 50 is
flawed; it’s not screening if it’s diagnosed late.

Please bring our message, and perhaps our fun but
informative music parody video (http://youtu.be/LSpyaGgA4rs)
to the attentionblog readers who can help us get the word out.

Our message: If you’re African American, start at 45.

Thank you for your assistance.

Warmly
